Blue Butterfly

Logline

At twelve she lost her sight. At fourteen she won a landmark settlement. At twenty they declared her incompetent. Now, Becca Meadows is fighting back against the legal system that took away her independence and the Conservator determined to keep her money under his control.

Synopsis

INSPIRED BY A TRUE STORY

Blind, brain damaged, and locked under a Conservatorship, BECCA MEADOWS is a prisoner in her own home. With round-the-clock caregivers dictating her every move, Becca and her husband JEFF’s life is anything but ordinary.

When TOM SCHMIDT, her Conservator, denies Becca an increase to her meager allowance from her trust fund, she finally snaps. Becca searches for a lawyer to take on her case against Tom and the Conservatorship. She is rejected by every law firm in town until she stumbles upon GERRITY, an inexperienced but eager attorney who is willing to become her David against Goliath.

In an impossible-to-win two-day court battle, Tom’s legal team paints Jeff as a jobless, homeless, opportunist and brings into question Becca’s competency. Becca soon cracks under the stress of the trial and retreats inward where she reconnects with her twelve-year-old self.

This DOPPELGÄNGER, created in the gloomy Sinkhole of Becca’s mind, takes her on an emotional journey through her memories. Together they uncover the truth about Jeff’s true nature, her mother’s role in Becca being locked under the Conservatorship, and the key to her freedom.

But when Becca realizes her Doppelgänger is determined to keep her in the Sinkhole, she climbs desperately back to reality and challenges the Judge on his ruling. After citing her rights as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Judge agrees to let her pick a new guardian.

Becca emerges from the courthouse victorious. She now has the will to keep fighting and advocating for her freedom. No matter how many years it will take.

Color and Tone

BLUE BUTTERFLY will showcase a transitional color palette indicative of Becca’s emotional arc. The first act will be graded with a warm and earthy colorspace. By contrast, the courtroom battle unfolds with claustrophobic and anxiety-inducing tones of brown and grey. Once inside the Sinkhole, the film takes on cool blue tones evoking grief, sadness, and death.

Sound Design

The sound-scape in BLUE BUTTERFLY creates an immersive world for the visually impaired and sighted alike. Becca’s waking moments in the hospital are set entirely over black with sounds building gradually allowing the audience to experience her world being blind. The Sinkhole will feature a multilayered sound design with echoes, separation, and movement of effects and voices to pull the audience directly into Becca’s fractured mind.
